Seven in One Blow – 10th Anniversary Production!
For the tenth consecutive season, Axis Company will present its winter show for children, Seven In One Blow, or The Brave Little Kid. Adapted from the classic fairy tale by The Brothers Grimm, this interactive play with music is conceived by Axis Company and directed by Randy Sharp featuring Axis’ signature blend of advanced technology and live performance. Children in the audience will be encouraged to participate in many of the Kid’s challenges with singing and organized “shout outs.”

A-Lab Forum: ARTE UTIL
centers around the works of artists whose practice involves social and political engagement. Through actions, performances, situations, and in may instances the reference to the object(s) , participating artists explore possible ways to bridge the gap between audiences and art experience. Taking as departure the notion of Arte Util (Useful Art), first introduced in the 1960’s , the forum will open the dialogue to offer a possible re-formulation of ideas behind artistic creation, aesthetics, alternative narratives, and public participation. Selected artists were invited to present their work and share their approach, ideas and experimentation with art that can be found in the streets outside the white box of a gallery or museum setting.

Krymov Lab A Story: Dido and Aeneas at CPR – Center for Performance Research
Krymov Lab presents Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas as an “object-based opera” performed by a company of stage designers led by Vera Martynova. All graduating students of GITIS, the Moscow Theater Academy, the young artists not only devised, conceived, imagined, and created every element on stage but they are also performers and singers.Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas found its inspiration in the Book IV of Virgil’s Aeneid and tells the tragic love story of Dido, Queen of Carthage and the Trojan hero Aeneas. Its first known performance was at Josias Priest’s girls’ school in London in 1688, was created for an intimate space, and required only a few instruments. As a consequence, this reimagining of Dido and Aeneas recreates the original intimacy by communicating with the audience in a very personal and direct way: living stage images are constructed and deconstructed ceaselessly in front of our eyes in a montage of real-time sound, technology and performance coming together in song.

The longest night of the year is approaching, when the sun will appear to stop at a certain point in the sky and then re-emerge, as if coming back to life. Join us as we celebrate The Winter Solstice in song, image, word and more. Also, we are thrilled to announce our new monthly initiative – CAUSE OF THE MONTH*, where we will select a worthy cause to present to you, our community, with hopes of making a positive impact on the world around us. See below for details. (Last month’s food drive was a huge success, by the way, and thanks to those who made a donation.) And so, LIGHT, let’s spread as much of it as we can, shall we? Hope to see you on the 18th.

Electronic Literature Organization (ELO) presents an evening of multimedia, interactive performative-readings highlighting a broad range of born-digital literary forms, including game-inspired, collaborative, database, film/video, generative, and kinetic image work. The evening’s presentations showcase five projects selected from the second Electronic Literature Collection, published in February 2011, and created by Oni Buchanan, Jhave,Illya Szilak, Sandy Baldwin, and collaborators Stephanie Strickland and Cynthia Lawson Jaramillo, with videos by Paul Ryan.

Dana Melamed: Transforming Voids/Group Exhibition
This exhibition represents an important milestone in Melamed’swork, namely the transition from wall pieces with three-dimensional elements to sculptures, expanding her narrative of the ongoing power struggle between humanity and nature. In her previous exhibitions, Melamed has been dealing with the effects of human aggression against nature and mankind. The primal drive for survival is ingrained in both the human organism Reflection and nature, thus the struggle is a never-ending cycle.

Has More Openness Led to More Acceptance? The LGBT community has a long history of participation, activism, and contribution to the fabric of American culture. Its pioneers have paved the way for many policies enacted in corporate America, on Capitol Hill, and within state and local government- all with the aim to include and respect. Now, more than ever before, we find LGBT themes prominently integrated into pop culture and mainstream media. Is the hit television show “Modern Family” pointing us all in the direction of a new American reality?
